Hints for a Successful Preparation for the Miss Rodeo California Pageant

Have your photograph taken as soon as possible in western attire and hat.  No personal crown or sash.

Study suggestions: Call the PRCA and subscribe to the Pro Rodeo Sports News and keep all of the issues.  Also buy a PRCA media guide and ask about humane information. Additionally contact the WPRA COLORADO Headquarters to subscribe to the WPRA News as well as the MRA office for the MRA Newsletter.

Get your speeches written and memorized as soon as possible.  Video tape your speech and review your delivery!

Work on your wardrobe: You will need 2 western evening outfits, one for the California Speech and Modeling competition and one for Coronation. These dresses or skirt & jacket should reflect a distinctive western flair, appropriate for eveningwear.  The personal interview outfit should be a dress or skirt with jacket suitable for daywear. The second interview outfit to be worn for the Horsemanship and Rodeo Knowledge Interview should consist of Wrangler jeans with western blouse/shirt (jackets/vest optional).  In addition you will need one horsemanship outfit consisting of Wranglers and a tucked in horsemanship blouse. Please be sure to review the final schedule, as you will note additional outfits may be needed for tours and outings. Contestants are expected to appear in “full Western attire” at all times. Ask around your area if there are any other titleholders or past contestants who have outfits to sell or lend. Be creative, mix and match and remember you can always wear an outfit to the Coronation that you have worn previously in the competition.

Ride all types of horses and work with a trainer who has knowledge in reining and western type equitation.  A trainer that is familiar with rodeo and queen pageants would be helpful!

Read the newspaper, study California issues and watch the news. Current events will definitely be a part of the competition.
